26|bBlog: Smarty blog
March 6th, 2006 by Marcel Ursprung
bBlog started as an experiment by Eaden McKee, to see how the Smarty templating system could be used to support a full featured blogging CMS. This tight focus has kept the project centered on the template concept, making all new features fit into Smarty’s modular framework.
It was developed with PHP/MySQL and Smarty templating, and released under the GPL. This means it’s free to use, free to modify and redistribute, easy to host, and blogs can be customized with simple smarty code (no programming skills required).
bBlog has all the basic features you would expect from blogware. A few notable features are the comment anti-spam with image verification protection, threaded comments, and the RSS feed fetcher which is a feed aggregator for your blog. It has multiple author support, automatic post pings (through XML-RPC), and a browser bookmarklet for fast publishing when your see something interesting while surfing the web.
The bBlog developer community is relatively small, not as active as some other open source projects, but they do release regular updates and patches.
“bBlog is a powerful, elegant personal publishing system written in PHP and released as free, Open Source software under the GPL. It is a flexible but simple way to blog that works for blogging beginners, and can grow into a more advanced user’s needs.”
